Artist Reception: Amy Reader

Amy Reader is a Chicago born artist who moved to Charlotte, NC in 2004. She has had artistic aspirations since a young age when, much to her mother’s dismay, she practiced carving her artist’s signature into nearly every surface in her childhood home. Amy attended the University of Richmond where she studied Studio Art. Her work has been featured in galleries across the country. In 2016, she built a permanent installation in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru. Currently she lives in South Charlotte with her husband. She works out of her home studio which she shares with her cat, Hugo. You can see more of her work at amyreaderartist.com and follow her on social media at @amyreaderartist.

Artist Statement
Amy Reader is a fiber artist based in Charlotte, NC. Each wall hanging is hand sewn and one of a kind. The majority of the stitches are intentionally left visible. Similar to how a tree rings create a record of its growth, each stitch records the moments spent working on one piece. The colors and forms are inspired by the repeated patterns found in the petals of a flower and in the rings of a tree. All of these forms in both the wall hangings and the paintings call back to the artist’s formative years which were spent roaming a botanical garden with a sketchbook. Amy uses mixed textiles, yarn, and embroidery floss in the creation of her wall hangings.
